Nathan Lyon has stated that Australia is eager to rectify the mistakes from their disappointing Test series against Sri Lanka in 2022.
The experienced spin bowler, who claimed seven wickets in Australia’s resounding victory by an innings and 242 runs in the first Test at Galle, emphasised the necessity of establishing their dominance early on as they aim for a clean sweep in the series.
Australia’s track record in Asia over the past decade has not been encouraging, with just one Test series triumph during that period—an elusive 1-0 win against Pakistan three years ago.
However, following last week’s performance, the atmosphere in the visitors’ dressing room is charged with excitement as they stand just one match away from achieving a significant series victory over Sri Lanka—a target they failed to secure from a similar position in 2022.
“I had a chat with Mitch Starc over a beer after the game about that 2022 series,” Lyon conveyed to the media on Monday.

“I feel there is significant motivation within the team.
“Our goal is to enhance our journey towards greatness, ensuring that we take a 2-0 lead.
“We’re on that path; we haven’t quite reached our destination yet, but that’s our aim.”
Lyon acknowledged a newfound unity within the squad since their last tour, noting that seasoned teammates have also regained their confidence with both bat and ball.

“We aspire to be recognised as a great team, and part of that journey involves sealing our performance and ensuring no one can return,” Lyon remarked.
“This is merely my perspective, but we have exceptional players in the dressing room.
“When you consider Steve Smith reaching 10,000 runs, and Starc on the brink of 100 Test matches—

“And it’s not solely about those present; we have outstanding players at home, whether they be injured or on paternity leave.
“It’s all about the squad mentality, and that’s the essence of our approach.”
The second and concluding Test of the series is set to commence on Thursday.
