As the NRL gears up for the 2025 season, Brisbane will debut the oldest halves partnership, following Ben Hunt’s announcement regarding his playing position.
The experienced playmaker revealed to 9News Queensland that he will take on the five-eighth role while rising star Ezra Mam serves a nine-match suspension.
Hunt will wear the No.6 jersey, teaming up with fellow veteran Adam Reynolds in the halves.
Both players are 34, with Hunt set to celebrate his 35th birthday in March, making their combined age the highest for any starting halves duo in the NRL.

Meanwhile, Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans and Luke Brooks have also both surpassed their 20s, but their combined age is significantly lower, sitting at just 65.
In Melbourne, Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster are both 30 years old.
Hunt confirmed he will remain in the halves until Mam returns, at which point he intends to transition to the hooker position.
This trio of stars will be joined by the explosive fullback Reece Walsh, potentially forming the most impressive spine in the league this season.
“I considered all aspects and evaluated the roster,” he explained.
“I believe I can still enjoy this role and make a meaningful contribution to what I consider – if we can all stay fit – one of the top spines in the competition.
“I’m quite looking forward to it.”
Hunt’s shift to hooker will be an intriguing development, particularly given his history as a halfback in the NRL, though he has played at dummy-half for Queensland in State of Origin.
This transition leaves fellow players Billy Walters and Blake Mozer in a state of uncertainty.
After a disappointing 2024 season, where they finished 12th despite reaching the grand final the previous year, the Broncos saw coach Kevin Walters lose his job.
Michael Maguire has now taken over the coaching responsibilities at Red Hill.
Brisbane’s season opener is scheduled against the Roosters on March 6.
