The Newcastle Knights have granted fullback Tamika Upton an immediate release from the remaining three years of her contract, a decision that is set to send ripples throughout the NRLW.
Reports suggest that Upton sought the release due to personal and family reasons, hailing from Rockhampton, Queensland.
In an official statement, the Knights expressed that after “thorough and careful consideration,” they agreed to part ways with Upton.

The 27-year-old was awarded the Karyn Murphy Medal as player of the match in the grand final during both of Newcastle’s premiership triumphs in 2022 and 2023.
“Tamika has been an exceptional player for our NRLW team in recent times,” Knights director of football Peter Parr stated. “While we’re saddened to see her go, she leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable moments, and we will always hold her contributions close to our hearts. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”
Looking back on her time in Newcastle, Upton acknowledged that her decision was not made lightly.
“The Newcastle Knights will always be dear to me,” Upton expressed. “This has been an incredibly tough choice, given my love for representing the Knights and being part of the Hunter community.”

“I am extremely thankful to Philip Gardner and Peter Parr for their support and understanding; I take great pride in what we’ve accomplished together over the last three years.”
Upton joined the Knights from Brisbane at the conclusion of the 2021 season and extended her contract in April last year with a five-year deal.
In a remarkable 2023 season, Upton not only secured a second consecutive Karyn Murphy Medal and championship but also triumphed in the State of Origin series, clinched the NRLW Dally M Medal, earned the Knights’ NRLW Player of the Year award, and received her maiden selection for the Australian Jillaroos squad.
She has participated in 37 first-grade matches, including 26 for the Knights, tallying 19 tries.
While Upton is expected to team up with either the Broncos or the Titans for the much-anticipated 2025 NRLW season, an official agreement has yet to be finalised.
