Bayer Leverkusen’s manager Xabi Alonso, aged 43, remains optimistic about the title race despite Saturday’s goalless stalemate against Bayern Munich at home, which leaves his side trailing by eight points from the top of the table.
The reigning champions dominated proceedings but were unable to penetrate a Bayern team that opted for a more defensive approach, clearly content with a draw to maintain their lead with 12 matches remaining in the season.
This match marked only the second occasion since 1992 that Bayern failed to register a shot on target in a league encounter.
“We performed exceptionally well. We did everything possible to secure a victory, except for putting the ball in the net,” Alonso expressed to the media.
The coach admitted he was taken aback by the extent of his team’s control against the current league leaders.
“Honestly, having watched many of Bayern’s matches this season where they have been dominant, today we were the dominant side.”
“The statistics reflect our superiority, but we lacked a bit of precision in front of goal.”

Alonso stated that there is still a possibility for his team to close the gap on the league leaders.
“It wasn’t enough to change the table, but the season is far from over.”
“As I mentioned last year when Leverkusen were on the path to the title, we can revisit this discussion in April. There are plenty of points still up for grabs,” the Spaniard remarked.
“Without question, we’ll continue to fight across all competitions, and our aim is to keep winning.”
Although disappointed, Alonso maintained that the performance demonstrated that they can compete with anyone.
“It’s a strong foundation to build upon in the league and especially in the Champions League.”

In Europe’s Champions League, Leverkusen stood out as the only German team to make it into the top eight.
Bayern’s head coach Vincent Kompany responded firmly to criticisms suggesting his side didn’t deserve the draw.
“Leverkusen certainly earned their right to apply pressure, but we displayed the mentality to block shots—players like Harry (Kane) and Jamal (Musiala) who’ve typically been our goalscoring threats.”
