Joe Schmidt’s time as head coach of the Wallabies is coming to a close, with the 59-year-old announcing he will not be leading the team into the next Rugby World Cup.
On Thursday afternoon, the Wallabies confirmed that Schmidt has signed an extension to his contract, which will now run until the conclusion of the 2025 Rugby Championship. Rugby Australia is preparing to search for a new head coach to take over following that period.
This extension ensures that Schmidt will remain at the helm until the final Bledisloe Cup match in Perth on October 4.
Peter Horne, RA’s director of high performance, addressed the reason behind Schmidt’s shift in focus towards his family commitments.
Schmidt’s son resides in New Zealand and is coping with severe epilepsy.
“We are thrilled that Joe will continue to lead the Wallabies past his current contract,” Horne stated.

“After observing the positive influence Joe has had on both the playing and coaching staff of the Wallabies, we were eager to extend his stay following the Lions series.
“Joe has expressed his enjoyment in working with the Wallabies but also highlighted the importance of spending more quality time with his family.”
In a statement released by RA, Schmidt elaborated on his decision to prolong his contract for a brief period post-Lions series.
“The immediate focus is on the British and Irish Lions, but I recognise the significance of continuity as we transition into two challenging away Test matches against South Africa,” he noted.
Phil Waugh, the CEO of RA, applauded Schmidt for his contributions to the Wallabies.
“Joe’s passion, insight, and dedication have played a crucial role in reigniting pride in the Wallabies jersey and rallying support from fans across the nation ahead of a series of significant events, starting with the arrival of the British and Irish Lions in June,” he remarked.
“We are pleased to see Joe extend his involvement with the Wallabies beyond his original contract, and we look forward to starting the search for his successor.”
Wide World of Sports understands that both Schmidt and RA are keen for him to take on an advisory role after this year if the incoming coach is receptive to the idea.
