Liverpool’s defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is a significant doubt for the upcoming League Cup final against Newcastle United this weekend after picking up an injury during Tuesday’s Champions League round of 16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, according to manager Arne Slot.
PSG triumphed over Liverpool 4-1 on penalties at Anfield, securing their place in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 win in the second leg.
The 26-year-old Alexander-Arnold was substituted for Jarell Quansah in the 73rd minute, with reports from British media suggesting he has an ankle injury.
“(Trent) had to be replaced, which is never a good indication,” Slot commented.
“From what I’ve heard from those who witnessed the incident, it didn’t look promising. It would be a surprise if he’s fit for Sunday.”
Centre-back Ibrahima Konate also left the field in the latter stages of extra time, but Slot indicated that it was likely just due to fatigue.
Alexander-Arnold’s potential absence would also impact the England squad, who are set to face Albania on March 21 and Latvia three days later in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
