Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has boldly declared that Super Rugby Pacific boasts a greater intensity compared to the Test rugby he played during last year’s Spring Tour.
The 21-year-old made his debut for the Waratahs on Friday night, helping NSW secure a thrilling 37-36 win in Sydney.
Despite a mixed performance from the fullback, the positives outweighed the negatives, although he had to leave Allianz Stadium in the 66th minute due to cramp.

“I believe the intensity here is greater – that’s what Super Rugby is about,” Suaalii told the media.
“To be frank, I was speaking with (Waratahs co-captain) Jake Gordon about it – the amount of ball in play, the level of contact, and the readiness of the Highlanders to play today was impressive.
“I took a few big hits. It was great. The quality of rugby we’re playing here, especially against those Kiwi teams… I’m just pleased we managed to clinch the win.”

Following his departure from the Roosters, Suaalii featured in all four of Australia’s northern hemisphere Test matches against England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
His debut as a Wallaby in London saw him earn man of the match, though subsequent performances were less impactful.
Suaalii played in the centres during the Spring Tour, but Waratahs coach Dan McKellar has opted to field him at fullback thus far.
“There were moments I found myself out of position, but overall, I enjoyed the chance to observe the game from the 15 jersey and gain a different viewpoint compared to playing centre,” Suaalii shared.
“There’s certainly plenty of aspects to improve on.”
“It requires more running than centre, where you tend to make more tackles. There was a lot of high-speed running, so I need to build up my fitness.”
While all eyes were on Suaalii, another Waratahs debutant captivated the crowd with two late tries.
Suaalii was full of praise for Siosifa Amone, the 22-year-old prop who returned to Sydney after two seasons with the Force in Perth.
Amone notably shed 25kg during the pre-season.

“That was his moment,” said Suaalii.
“He has been putting in the work since September last year. He came in a bit heavy, but he committed himself to training every single day.
“His energy is infectious, and it’s fantastic to see someone like Sifa, who is so crucial to our team, score twice and help us win the match; it was a memorable occasion for us all…
“A win is a win, and we must celebrate it – it’s beneficial for our morale.
“Heading into the bye, it’s nice to relax, but there’s a lot to review from this game. We’ll be back on Wednesday to analyse everything before facing the Fijian (Drua) team on February 28 in Sydney.”
Last season, the Waratahs ‘achieved’ the wooden spoon.
