In a significant announcement on Monday, Moana Pasifika revealed that superstar Ardie Savea will take on the role of captain for the upcoming 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.
The Auckland-based franchise has secured the services of the All Blacks and Hurricanes talisman, marking a major triumph in their off-season recruitment efforts.
At 31, Savea was named the world player of the year in 2023 and currently serves as the vice captain for the All Blacks.

His tenure at Moana Pasifika will see him unite with his older brother, Julian Savea, as they both play under the guidance of renowned former All Blacks player Tana Umaga.
“It’s a unique opportunity, and I feel it’s part of my journey that I’m meant to embrace,” Savea shared. “After signing with the team, I had a conversation with Tana about this role. After some contemplation and discussions with my wife and close family, I concluded that accepting this role felt right.”

“I intend to lead by first taking responsibility for my own performance during matches and at training, as well as in everyday life. My goal is also to support my teammates, the franchise, and the community through service,” he added.
Savea’s move to the north represents a major shift within Super Rugby from a New Zealand perspective, complemented by significant changes in the Australian teams.
