A multitude of runs, brilliant strategies, and an astonishing catch.
This is a series that Steve Smith will remember vividly, especially his remarkable catch during Sri Lanka’s second innings in the second Test, which is destined to be talked about for years to come.
After Australia exerted control for the first 25 overs against the home side in Galle, Sri Lanka responded with a strong effort spearheaded by captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews.
The pair forged a partnership of 47 runs before Smith pulled off a sensational feat.

Off a delivery from spinner Matt Kuhnemann, the ball was driven forward by Dhananjaya, only to edge off his bat towards the slips. Smith made an incredible one-handed dive to catch the ball cleanly.
The umpires referred the decision to the third official, and replays confirmed there was no doubt Smith had taken the catch cleanly.
“When reflecting on his career, many will mention his runs … but equally impressive is his fielding ability,” noted Simon Katich on Seven.
“That was an absolute stunner, and it came at a crucial juncture … (Dhananjaya de Silva) was starting to pose a real threat.”
This remarkable performance is just another highlight in Smith’s extraordinary series, where he’s amassed 272 runs, averaging 136.
His captaincy has also been superb, particularly in the first innings of the second Test when he strategically brought in Mitchell Starc and Travis Head, both of whom claimed wickets in their initial overs.
