Inter Milan salvaged a last-minute 1-1 draw in the thrilling derby against AC Milan on Sunday, but manager Simone Inzaghi was left contemplating some missed opportunities while commending his team’s fight against the odds.
Inzaghi’s men struck the woodwork three times in the second half and saw three goals ruled out throughout the encounter before finally levelling the score during stoppage time.
“The players were outstanding, they truly pushed their limits,” Inzaghi commented to Sky Sports.
“Regrettably, they could not overcome the various setbacks. Three hits on the post, three disallowed goals, and an incredible penalty that wasn’t awarded. They were remarkable, and we managed to equalise right at the end.”
“There is a sense of disappointment, as we always aim for victory, and that didn’t happen. Even facing these challenges, we refused to be disheartened.”
Inzaghi made all five substitutions with 14 minutes remaining, with one of those newcomers, Nicola Zalewski, having only joined on loan from AS Roma the night before.
“He made a significant impact, showing his quality at a time when we needed someone like him,” Inzaghi remarked.
“I’m pleased; he was ready right from this morning and will be a valuable asset for us.”
Zalewski’s presence was immediately felt as the Polish midfielder set up Stefan de Vrij to net the equaliser.
“It’s certainly been a whirlwind, as we rushed everything last night,” Zalewski said.
“We aimed to be ready in time for today’s match; while it was fortunate in some respects, we did well to secure a draw.”
