Former England cricket star Michael Vaughan has taken aim at the women’s team following their woeful 16-0 defeat in the Ashes series against Australia.
The English squad concluded a disappointing tour with an innings and 122-run drubbing in the sole Test match at the MCG on Saturday evening.
This outcome has sent the cricketing community in England into a tailspin, demanding explanations as the team departs Australia without securing a single victory.
“There are significant questions that need addressing regarding the England women’s team,” Vaughan expressed on X.
“Primarily from those who have held roles within the ECB for many years.”

The focus of these queries may well centre around England’s dismal fielding display on the second day of the Test, where they dropped Australian centurion Annabel Sutherland not once, but twice early in her innings.
Sutherland went on to make history with a score of 163 off 258 deliveries, becoming the first woman to score a century at the MCG.
Vaughan also praised the Australian side, branding them “ruthless” in their commanding victory over their opponents.
“However, we must not overlook the quality of the Australian women, an exceptional group of skilled, disciplined and ruthless cricketers,” he noted.
Fans responded to Vaughan’s comments with agreement, urging for a significant change within the women’s coaching staff and player lineup.
“A humiliating outcome,” one user remarked on X.
“Perhaps it’s time for a new coach, new captain, and a fresh direction?,” suggested another.
Adding to Vaughan’s critique, commentator Isabelle Westbury questioned the leadership and culture prevalent in the English dressing rooms.
“There’s a leadership issue here. Whether it’s Heather Knight leading on the field or the coach, even extending higher than that, this isn’t merely a problem that occurred over 45 minutes,” Westbury commented on Fox.

Westbury further condemned England’s harsh decision to place their least experienced player, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, in front of the media following a dismal fielding performance.
“Whether you like it or not, their performance is assessed against Australia and their success in ICC tournaments. By those standards, Australia has shown dominance,” she stated.
“It’s time to scrutinise all levels of leadership, including Clare Connor, the general manager for England Women’s Cricket and also the deputy CEO of the England and Wales Cricket Board, who is present here.”
“There should certainly be accountability and a degree of introspection.”
Australia claimed the Ashes series 16-0, without dropping a single match across ODIs, T20s, or the Test.
