Newly appointed chief executive Tim Watsford has expressed St George Illawarra’s “strong ambition” to participate in the Las Vegas season opener scheduled for 2026.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald earlier this week, the Dragons are among four NRL teams being considered for a trip to the USA next year.
The suggested match-up at this early stage could see them face off against their long-time rivals, Canterbury.

Watsford, who was announced as the joint venture’s new leader this week, will not officially start until June but is optimistic about landing a spot in Vegas.
“Playing on the biggest stage is what you strive for,” he shared with SEN Radio.
“It’s well known that the Dragons have expressed a wish to make the trip. Although I’m not formally in the position yet, discussions at the board level have already commenced.
“There’s a genuine desire for this, and the Dragons truly belong on the grandest stages. That’s my responsibility, to ensure they compete in the most significant matches and showcase themselves to the world, and what better way to elevate the mighty Red V brand into new territories.
“It’s on the agenda … I’m eager to discuss this with Andrew [Abdo] and the team at head office when I officially take my seat.”

Watsford, who previously held a position with the NRL, commended both Abdo and Peter V’landys for their efforts in getting the Vegas initiative underway over the last couple of years.
The former Supercars leader will take the helm at a club eager for success, and he hopes to play a significant role in guiding the Dragons back to prominence.

“Ever since I was a child, I’ve held a passion for rugby league, and it’s been a privilege to work with Andrew and the team at head office,” Watsford noted.
“With significant responsibilities come the potential for great success, and this is my chance to elevate arguably the most prominent brand in league to new heights.
“It’s a big task with a big club and a well-known brand, coupled with high expectations from numerous dedicated fans. I’m eager to dive in, make a substantial impact, and drive success for the Dragons.”
St George Illawarra will commence their season against the Bulldogs on March 8.
