Detective Constable Gordon Irikefe has been dismissed from the police force following his involvement in football-related hooliganism while donned in a balaclava at an Arsenal match.
After a misconduct hearing regarding several incidents of hooliganism during Arsenal games from October 2022 to April 2024, Irikefe was terminated without notice and issued a three-year football banning order by Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday.
It was alleged that Irikefe launched a flare into the crowd during Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on April 17, 2023.
On the same day, he was apprehended by German law enforcement for wearing a complete balaclava and sunglasses inside the stadium, resulting in a €100 fine.
He is prohibited from approaching within one mile of the Emirates Stadium four hours before and after Arsenal home fixtures, and he cannot enter any town, city, or borough of London four hours prior to or after an away match in those areas.
Detective Superintendent Emma Bond, responsible for policing in the Central South region, commented on the ruling and condemned Irikefe’s behaviour.
“DC Irikefe has demonstrated an unacceptable pattern of conduct at football matches, which is inexcusable for anyone, especially a police officer who is expected to uphold the highest standards both in and out of uniform.”
“His actions have not only led to a football banning order, but they have cost him his position as well.”
“I appreciate the efforts of our professional standards and football unit colleagues for compiling the evidence in this matter, allowing us to take decisive action.”
