In recent years, good days have been a rarity for passionate Panthers supporter Jason Sanderson.
The 28-year-old attended Patrician Brothers Blacktown twenty years ago alongside current Penrith stars Izack Tago and Soni Luke, all sharing the dream of becoming NRL legends.
While Tago and Luke have successfully pursued their dreams, Sanderson’s journey has taken a tragic turn.
“Around three years ago, I was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer,” he revealed to Wide World of Sports.
“After numerous treatments, they performed surgery and removed a mass from my abdomen that was about the size of a football, weighing six kilograms.”
“I thought that would be the end of it, but now the cancer has returned – and it’s at stage four.”

“I’m just heartbroken – it’s spread throughout my body and I’ve started chemotherapy again this week. It’s tough to wrap my head around but I’m determined to fight it.”
Despite his challenging circumstances, Sanderson couldn’t contain his joy one unforgettable day last week.
“Unknown to me, one of our former teachers organised for Izack and Soni to come and visit, bringing with them a jersey and boots they had worn during games,” he shared.
“I was in disbelief – it meant everything to me. It gave me a glimmer of hope when I’ve been lacking it lately.”
Sanderson’s mother, Dail, was brought to tears by the thoughtful gesture from the two Panthers premiership players.
“Jason has been a die-hard Panthers fan since he was just seven years old – he’s probably their biggest supporter,” she said, holding back tears.
“He attends every match he can, even making the journey to Townsville, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast to cheer them on.
“Seeing the joy on his face when the boys came to visit… it was absolutely priceless.
“Life has been incredibly tough for us, and I pray to God every day.
“This surprise from the Panthers boys felt like a miracle for us.”
