All eyes will be firmly fixed on Eels sensation Dylan Brown this afternoon, especially with the Knights’ substantial $13 million offer for the upcoming season hanging in the air.
The five-eighth has dominated headlines recently, as speculation about his future in the NRL intensifies just before the season kicks off.
Brown is rumoured to be in talks with Newcastle regarding a lucrative 10-year deal, and with his halves partner Mitchell Moses out for the start of the year, the spotlight is on the Kiwi star to demonstrate he’s worth the hefty investment.
“I feel for Dylan – everyone will be watching him,” said Andrew Johns on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show in the lead-up to the match against Melbourne.
“He’s an extraordinary talent, but can he function as a halfback directing a team’s strategy? The doubts are there. Can he don the No. 7 and guide a side effectively? I’m not so sure.
“This next six weeks are crucial; it’s an audition. He’s dealing with immense pressure and how he navigates this will be telling.”
While the Knights are eager to secure a star player, Brad Fittler believes the financial commitments being made could jeopardise the club’s long-term sustainability.
“I think it’s irresponsible for the Knights to have both Kalyn [Ponga] and Dylan taking up nearly $3 million of your salary cap,” remarked the former NSW Blues coach.
