During Sunday’s 2-0 triumph over Manchester City, Mohamed Salah (32) set a remarkable five records in the Premier League for Liverpool.
The Egyptian forward was instrumental in the Reds’ away victory, netting a goal in the 14th minute, which significantly bolstered their title aspirations. He also laid on an assist for Dominik Szoboszlai just before the halftime break.
In accomplishing this, Salah made history by becoming the first player in the history of English top-flight football to both score and provide an assist in both encounters against the reigning champions within a single season.
With his impressive display against Pep Guardiola’s side, the former Chelsea and AS Roma player has now been either a goalscorer or a provider in 49 different league matches throughout his time in Europe’s top five leagues.
Only Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo have surpassed this achievement, with Messi achieving it in 102 matches and Ronaldo in 65.
Salah’s goal against City extended his scoring streak to eight matches, which dates back to January 21 during a Champions League clash against Lille at Anfield.
His efforts also raised his Premier League goal tally to 25, further extending his lead over closest rival Erling Haaland. The goal marked his 16th away strike of the current 2024/25 season, equalling the record held by Kevin Phillips from the 1999/00 season and Harry Kane from 2022/23.
Additionally, Salah became the first player in Premier League history to be involved in 40 or more goals in two separate seasons. In the 2017/18 season, he tallied 32 goals and 10 assists, while in the current campaign, he has accumulated 25 goals and 15 assists across 27 matches.
Moreover, Salah holds the record for the most goals (9) and assists (6) against teams managed by Pep Guardiola throughout the latter’s managerial career in the top flight.
“It’s a fantastic result; it’s a challenging place to come and play. They are a formidable team with an outstanding manager, so I’m thrilled we secured the win,” Salah remarked to the media following the match, as reported by PremierLeague.com.
“It’s special to win here, particularly when you’re in the title race. Now we need to stay composed because pressure can sometimes get to us.
When asked if he believes he is performing at his peak, he responded: “I’m not sure. It’s subjective. Some might prefer my earlier seasons, while I prefer my current form because of winning the league and assisting younger players. It feels special.
“We need to clinch another title. The experienced players and I are eager for another victory.”
Thanks to this victory, Liverpool remain at the top of the Premier League table with 64 points, leading their nearest rivals, Arsenal, by 11 points.
