The Seattle Sounders displayed an impressive performance as they decisively defeated Western Conference rivals Los Angeles FC 5-2 in a thrilling Major League Soccer match on Saturday.
Both teams have been prominent contenders in the West in recent years, but it was Seattle, who triumphed over LAFC in last year’s Conference semi-finals, that asserted their dominance during the second half at Lumen Field.
Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, a college draft pick for Seattle who was promoted from their reserve side Tacoma Defiance, opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a precise finish after skillfully cutting in from the right.
LAFC managed to equalise seven minutes before the break, with homegrown forward Nathan Ordaz slotting in from close range following a frantic scramble in the box.
However, the Sounders regained the lead when Paul Rothrock unleashed a powerful shot from outside the area in the 57th minute, before Jordan Morris extended their advantage, scoring his 87th goal and becoming Seattle’s all-time leading scorer.
LAFC appeared shaky in defence and struggled to pose a threat in attack, where former France international Olivier Giroud once again had little impact.
Cristian Roldan’s clever finish made it 4-1 in the 84th minute, but LAFC managed to salvage some pride in stoppage time with a determined solo effort from David Martinez.
Yet, there was still time for the Sounders to add to their tally, as Albert Rusnak converted a low cross from Georgi Minoungou, sealing the comprehensive victory.
For the 30-year-old Morris, a homegrown talent from Seattle’s youth setup, it was a landmark occasion as he overtook Raul Ruidiaz to lead the club’s scoring charts.
“It means everything. I’ve been vocal about my ambition to score goals; it’s what drives me and how I aim to contribute to the team.” he expressed. “Being a local lad, having grown up in the academy, and being a supporter of the team while watching from the stands, it was always my dream to play on this field. Now, to have my name etched in the record books is a tremendous honour, especially doing it in front of my family; it’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.“
Strong Start for Union
The Philadelphia Union continued their exceptional start to the season under South African coach Bradley Carnell, clinching a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution and achieving three wins from three matches.
Israeli striker Tai Baribo scored his sixth goal in three outings, netting in the 76th minute with a well-placed header from an inswinging cross by Kai Wagner.
Serbian midfielder Jovan Lukic sealed the victory with a powerful shot from distance that found the net via the inside of the post.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati looked formidable as they defeated Toronto 2-0, with Kevin Denkey converting a penalty in the 73rd minute, followed by a clinical finish from Japanese winger Yuya Kubo to ensure the points.
Unbeaten D.C. United claimed a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City, while New York City also triumphed with a 2-1 win against Orlando at Yankee Stadium.
Earlier, the Columbus Crew, reigning 2023 MLS champions, were held to a goalless draw at home against the Houston Dynamo.
This Sunday, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami will host Charlotte, adding further excitement to the weekend’s fixtures.
