Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has expressed his disappointment with the players following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to struggling West Ham on Saturday. He lamented their inability to meet the expectations required of potential Premier League champions.
The Gunners’ aspirations for their first league title in 21 years took a significant hit with their initial home loss of the season, leaving them eight points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
Jarrod Bowen provided the sole goal of the match, nodding the ball in just before half-time, marking his 50th goal in the Premier League.
Indiscipline continued to plague Arsenal as Myles Lewis-Skelly was dismissed with 18 minutes left to play—this being the fifth red card received by Arteta’s team this season.

In recent weeks, Liverpool appeared to be feeling the weight of expectation as they dropped points against Everton and Aston Villa.
However, with their upcoming match against Manchester City on Sunday, the Reds have the opportunity to extend their lead to a mammoth 11 points.
“It’s not in our hands,” remarked Arteta regarding the title race.
“I am extremely frustrated about the aspects that are under our control—namely our performance and the result. We did not execute those as well as we could.”
“I am very disappointed and, of course, quite angry as well. Although we registered 20 shots, I never felt we reached the necessary standard and level.”
“We need to feel angry about this, and I hope we do because we fell short today, and I take full responsibility for that, so my frustration is profound.”
Arsenal’s title bid has been considerably hampered by injuries to almost their entire attacking lineup.
Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Bukayo Saka were unavailable again, necessitating midfielder Mikel Merino to step in as a make-shift centre-forward.
However, Arteta refused to use this as an excuse, calling for greater efforts from those who took to the pitch.
“I completely reject that notion as I am addressing the standards expected from the players and the team we faced today, myself included,” he stated.
“Our performance was nowhere near what is required to contend for a Premier League title.”
“We must reflect on how we can improve. The desire, commitment, and effort are unequivocal, but at this level, that alone is insufficient. You need to deliver quality to break down a very competent team and create the opportunities to score. Unfortunately, we did not achieve that today.”
