Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca issued explicit instructions to Filip Jorgensen during the team’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Southampton. “Distribute the ball from the back and don’t resort to long kicks, or you’ll find yourself substituted,” Maresca warned the Danish goalkeeper.
Although Jorgensen secured a clean sheet in the match, the Chelsea supporters frequently expressed their frustration when he attempted to play the ball out from the back.
Despite the jeers and boos directed at Chelsea’s deliberate approach, Jorgensen persisted in executing the tactics set by his coach, continuously seeking options.
Post-match, Enzo Maresca clarified his directives to Jorgensen, who has recently been favoured as the starting goalkeeper over Robert Sanchez.
“I made it clear to Filip: ‘If you play long balls, I will replace you.’ He was simply adhering to my instructions,” Maresca stated during the press conference.
“It’s a challenge for Filip, just as it was for Robert. In fact, all goalkeepers face such difficulties. They are simply following the game plan,” he added.
Jorgensen is set to feature again this weekend when Chelsea take on Leicester City, ahead of their first of two Conference League matches against FC Copenhagen.
