Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique expressed that both his team and Liverpool deserved a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals, given the thrilling and intense contest between the two teams in the last-16 round.
The Spaniard radiated pride as his squad came back from a goal down in the first leg to triumph over Premier League leaders Liverpool 4-1 in the penalty shootout at Anfield on Tuesday night.
“Both teams deserved to progress; they played better than us here, but I think my team exhibited tremendous personality and character at Anfield, in such a special venue,” he remarked.
“We aimed to put forth our best effort, although it was tough due to their intensity. Both teams merited qualification. The character and determination shown during the penalty shootout were remarkable, clearly reflecting the essence of our team.”
Ligue 1 leaders PSG have yet to clinch a Champions League title, having fallen to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final, while 2019 champions Liverpool were viewed as favourites to progress after finishing atop their group in the league phase.
“When the draw was made for the match between Liverpool and PSG, both managers recognised it as one of the finest fixtures in Europe,” Luis Enrique stated. “I believe both teams were exceptional.”
“We are pleased and optimistic about advancing to the next round.”
PSG received significant acclaim from analysts for their gritty win.
“You witnessed four flawless penalties under immense pressure; PSG deserve considerable credit,” former England striker Alan Shearer commented during the Amazon Prime broadcast.
“After the disappointment of losing the first leg despite a stellar performance, they returned to Anfield, absorbed the pressure, took the match to extra time and penalties, and converted those four perfect penalties. They’ve truly put in an outstanding effort across both games, and they’ll believe they warranted their place in the next round.”
