Golfing icon Gary Player has expressed that he wouldn’t be shocked if Tiger Woods chooses to sit out The Masters at Augusta this year.
This week, Woods is absent from the lineup for The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, marking the final year of his exemption from winning the 2019 Masters.
Woods participated in his Tomorrow Golf League earlier this week, although it was only the third time he’s played since the unexpected passing of his mother, Kultida, on February 4.
Alongside his mother’s death, Player emphasised the physical demands of competing at The Masters which could influence Woods’ decision.
He remarked that Woods’ “legs are not in great shape” due to lingering complications from a car crash in 2021, which have made it challenging for him to navigate a course over consecutive days.

“I’m a huge admirer of Tiger Woods. What he’s accomplished for golf worldwide is outstanding, alongside legends like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, along with many other players,” stated Player, a nine-time major champion, to SportsBoom.
“However, it’s essential to remember that your legs are what move you around on the course; they are the ones striking the ball, not your hands.”
“Unfortunately, his legs aren’t in optimal condition. Furthermore, The Masters course is particularly challenging — it’s not just about going up and down; there are side-hill lies too.”
“That can be incredibly tough on the legs. I’m not sure if he’ll manage to walk the course there. We all hope he’ll participate; everyone would love to see him play.”
If Woods decides to compete in The Masters, it would mark his first official tournament appearance since he missed the cut at the British Open last July.
Woods is on the entry list, and he has no deadline to confirm his participation at Augusta National.

Throughout his professional career, Woods has never missed the cut at The Masters, setting a tournament record last year with his 24th successful cut.
He has made 19 appearances at The Players Championship, with only one missed cut, which occurred in 2011 when he withdrew after a 42 on the front nine due to a left leg injury.
Woods, a two-time champion at The Players, hasn’t played in this premier PGA Tour event since 2019.
He finished tied for 30th and went on to secure his fifth green jacket at the Masters just a month later, marking his 15th major title.
