Today, Julian Nagelsmann revealed the German national team lineup for the Nations League quarter-final clash against Italy. He disclosed that he had reached out to 22-year-old striker Mika Biereth, currently with AS Monaco, to gauge his interest in representing Germany.
Biereth has certainly made a name for himself in Ligue 1, netting ten goals in just eight matches, thereby surpassing the previous goalscoring record held by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Born in London in 2003 to a Danish-German father and a Bosnian mother, Biereth is eligible to play for Denmark, Bosnia, Germany, and England.
During Thursday’s press conference, Nagelsmann was questioned about the prospect of including Biereth in the German squad.
“I had a conversation with him to understand if he would consider playing for us. He holds both Danish and British passports, and the last time he was eligible for Denmark was when he was 21 years old (with the U21 national team, ed.).”
“As such, it was not legal for him to represent Germany,” Nagelsmann explained.
Instead, Biereth has been called up to the Danish squad for the upcoming matches against Portugal.
