The surface at Allianz Stadium is once again facing criticism following the Roosters vs Broncos match, with Penrith legend Greg Alexander dubbing it “an ice-skating rink.”
Players, commentators, and supporters alike were adversely affected by the slippery conditions, prompting NRL fans to voice their annoyance over the numerous slips and tumbles observed during the Broncos’ 50-14 victory.
Last season, Clint Gutherson described the $828 million venue as “one of the worst fields” he’d ever played on, and while Thursday’s conditions were not as dire as the Roosters vs Eels match, in which players hilariously dodged large puddles due to the drainage system’s failure, they were still cause for concern.
Commenting on the game for Fox Sports, Alexander noted that the ground’s drainage was falling short, asserting that it had “greatly” influenced the quality of play.
“I’d call them passing showers,” he remarked. “Yet the surface is far too slippery given the minimal amount of rain they’ve had.”

“The conditions have been hugely detrimental.”
On SEN Radio Friday morning, Alexander took his critique further, voicing concerns that the Roosters may face a challenging season ahead. He suggested that the wet weather actually played to the advantage of Trent Robinson’s side, despite the heavy defeat.
“Allianz Stadium felt like an ice skating rink,” he remarked. “This situation worked in favour of the Sydney Roosters.”

“If this were Allegiant Stadium, the Broncos could have racked up 70 points.”
Following the match, Broncos coach Michael Maguire avoided commenting on the state of the pitch during his post-game press conference. Meanwhile, Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds danced around the topic when questioned by journalists.
“Both teams had to contend with it,” he said. “It was a bit soft underfoot, but overall fairly decent for this time of year.”
