Julian Carranza (24) of Feyenoord reflected on an unforgettable night after the Argentinian forward propelled his team into the Champions League round of 16 at the San Siro.
Despite feeling unwell, Carranza was unable to start against AC Milan and substituted for Feyenoord academy graduate Zepiqueno Redmond in the 64th minute. Just ten minutes later, the Argentine made a significant impact by scoring the crucial equaliser.
“I’m still feeling sick, but I’m incredibly happy,” Carranza expressed post-match. “It was really tough for me because I wasn’t at my best. Coming off the bench and scoring this goal is unbelievable, and it’s something I’ll never forget.”
“Hugo (Bueno) sent in a cross just before that went to the far post, so I knew it was likely to end up there again. I made the run, and all I had to do was head it in.”
Feyenoord took advantage of playing against ten men after Theo Hernandez received a second yellow card for a controversial dive. This advantage was a welcome relief for a Feyenoord side grappling with numerous injuries, as they were missing a total of eleven players.
About 4,000 passionate supporters travelled to Milan, providing unwavering encouragement throughout the match.
“Just look at our supporters,” said Carranza. “We’re progressing to the next round while eliminating a fantastic team like AC Milan. This is why I’m here.”
At the beginning of the season, Carranza was third in line for a starting position behind Mexican star Santiago Gimenez—who notched the opener in Tuesday’s knockout clash—and Ayase Ueda from Japan. Following Gimenez’s transfer to Champions League rivals Milan and Ueda’s injury that will sideline him for “weeks”, Carranza was set to make his ninth start of the season, but an ongoing illness kept him on the bench.
“I’m eager to participate in these matches and demonstrate my abilities. A lot has transpired since I joined Feyenoord, and it’s been a challenging start. Scoring this goal now is simply fantastic.”
