Vincenzo Grifo (31) played a pivotal role as SC Freiburg thrashed SV Werder Bremen 5-0 in the Bundesliga, marking their fourth consecutive unbeaten match at home.
The home side seized the initiative early on, but it was Die Grun-Weissen who registered the first serious attempt, with Andre Silva forcing a save from Noah Atubolu with a shot from distance.
However, it wasn’t long before Freiburg responded with a memorable moment.
As Silva attempted to clear a corner taken by Grifo, the ball looped into the air, allowing Kiliann Sildillia to execute an incredible bicycle kick and score just 15 minutes in.
Silva squandered a golden chance to level the score, heading Romano Schmid’s cross wide of the target, and had another effort blocked by Matthias Ginter.
Although Werder began to pose a threat from set-pieces, it was Freiburg who struck again in the 33rd minute. Grifo delivered a magnificent direct free-kick that curled past the wall, leaving Michael Zetterer rooted to the spot.
Silva was presented with a significant opportunity for a quick equaliser after Sildillia’s handball in the box, but Atubolu demonstrated his prowess by expertly saving the penalty.

After the restart, Werder maintained plenty of possession but failed to create any real danger, conceding yet again in the 57th minute as Grifo found space in the box and slotted home Lucas Holer’s precise cross.
Anthony Jung managed to prevent further damage with a goal-line clearance following another corner by Grifo, while Felix Agu thwarted a header from Holer after a block redirected Christian Gunter’s initial attempt towards the striker.
Ritsu Doan, however, refused to be denied, capitalising on Schmid’s mistake with a sharp first-time finish from Eren Dinkci’s pass.
Doan later added to the scoreline, tapping in Jan-Niklas Beste’s low cross, helping Freiburg secure their fourth consecutive Bundesliga win for the first time since January 2021, climbing to fourth place in the table ahead of RB Leipzig’s encounter with Heidenheim.
Conversely, Werder Bremen slumped to their third defeat in a row, recording just one win in their eight fixtures throughout 2025.
