In a dramatic finish, FC Midtjylland was eliminated from the UEFA Youth League after a penalty shootout, despite having a one-player advantage and leading 2-1 against Manchester City with just ten minutes remaining.
The U19 side from FC Midtjylland took the lead just before half-time when 17-year-old Julius Emefile seized on a misplaced pass from City goalkeeper Oliver Whatmuff, putting the plucky Danes ahead in the 41st minute.
However, the visitors quickly levelled the match early in the second half, with Lakyle Samuel finding himself completely unmarked to direct a header from close range into the net.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Manchester City was reduced to ten men after Charlie Gray picked up his second yellow card. Shortly after, 19-year-old Jaden Heskey inadvertently headed into his own goal while attempting to clear a cross from Midtjylland’s Mathis Konradsen, putting the Danish team back in front.
Yet, with just nine minutes to go, City’s Matthew Warhurst connected with a pass from Max Alleyne to equalise at 2-2, forcing the match into penalties.
Ultimately, Malik Pimpong of FC Midtjylland was the only player not to score from the spot, allowing Manchester City to progress to the next round of the tournament.
