Lars Seier Christensen, the principal shareholder of FC Copenhagen, has faced significant backlash following his remarks about the recent tense exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in the Oval Office on Saturday.
The Danish businessman, who holds 22.55 per cent of the shares in PARKEN Sport & Entertainment—parent company of FC Copenhagen—voiced strong criticism towards Zelenskyj in a Facebook post following the contentious discussion.
“Zelenskyj interrupts Trump and shows no respect for the hand that supports his fight for survival,” Christensen stated in his post.
He further directed his criticisms at European leaders, including Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who have praised Zelenskyj’s actions.
‘Zelenskyj’s performance was disastrous; he was on the verge of securing a solid deal that was practically in the bag. It’s ludicrous to hear European leaders commend his leadership after such an incident. His actions were profoundly incompetent, disrespectful, and foolish,” he stated, urging Zelenskyj to issue an apology to Trump.
Christensen’s controversial comments have drawn reactions from several notable figures associated with FC Copenhagen.
Former manager Ståle Solbakken, who secured eight Danish championships for the club and led them to the Champions League quarter-finals, expressed that FC Copenhagen should not accept such conduct from an investor:
“This poses a significant issue for FCK’s reputation and could cause considerable harm. Volodymyr Zelenskyj and the Ukrainian people have been fighting against tyranny for three years, and then someone like Lars Seier comes along to undermine that. It’s disgraceful.” said an outraged StÃ¥le Solbakken in an interview with Tipsbladet.
“I believe this is contrary to FCK’s values.”
Flemming Ostergaard, former Chairman of PARKEN Sport & Entertainment and past honorary member of the club, also voiced criticism towards Seier Christensen:
“If Lars and his supporters cannot recognise that Trump embodies narcissism, power-lust, deceit, vindictiveness, and opportunistic rhetoric that has no place in any respectable political discourse, then I need to part ways with them.”
The official fan club of FC Copenhagen has similarly distanced themselves from Seier Christensen’s remarks. As of now, the club has remained silent regarding his comments.
FC Copenhagen is currently leading the Danish Superliga, sitting just a point ahead of FC Midtjylland.
