Ryan Peake, a former member of the Rebels gang who has transformed his life through golf, secured a spot in the British Open field by winning the 104th New Zealand Open by a single stroke.
The 31-year-old from Western Australia described the victory as “life-changing” after successfully making an 8-foot par putt on the final hole, thus avoiding a four-way playoff against fellow Australian Jack Thompson, South Africa’s Ian Snyman, and Japan’s Kazuki Higi.
With a final-round score of 66, he concluded the tournament at 23-under, earning approximately $181,000 with his win.
Peake was a promising junior golfer and a teammate of Cameron Smith before he was sentenced to five years in prison for assault at the age of 21. He was affiliated with the outlawed Rebels gang in Australia.

His entry to New Zealand was almost delayed due to his criminal past, and he will also require clearance to compete in the UK for the Open, scheduled to be held at Royal Portrush on Northern Ireland’s north coast this year.
After serving his time, Peake returned to the sport and set about rebuilding his career, aided by renowned coach Richie Smith and the support of his family.
This season saw him attain his Australasian tour card, marking this victory as his first in the professional circuit.
“I always had faith in my abilities, but it was just a case of when I’d achieve it,” Peake remarked.
“Supported by my family and team, everyone had faith, and most importantly, I did too.”
Entering the final round, Peake was trailing four strokes behind the overnight leader, Guntaek Koh from South Korea.
He completed the last three rounds without a single bogey and took the lead for the first time with just six holes to play.
“I have truly changed my life,” Peake expressed. “Golf is my passion, and I just want to be present and play.”
“My story is what it is, but I’m focused on simply playing golf.”
