Former Feyenoord talent Santiago Gimenez (23) expresses his hopes for his old club to progress deep into the UEFA Champions League following their victory over AC Milan in the knockout stage.
The young Mexican striker departed Feyenoord during the latter part of the January transfer window, making the switch to AC Milan for an estimated fee of around €35 million.
Gimenez found the back of the net within the first 37 seconds, equalising for his team in the second leg of their knockout battle. “I can’t remember if I’ve ever scored that quickly before,” reflected the 32-time capped Mexican international after the match.
During his two-and-a-half seasons with Feyenoord, Gimenez netted 65 goals in 105 matches for the Rotterdam outfit. His time at the club was fruitful, as he celebrated winning the Eredivisie, the KNVB Cup, and the Johan Cruyff Shield.
“Certainly, there were many emotions involved. However, departing was a valuable experience. I’m quite saddened that we didn’t advance. We need to learn from this. Congratulations to Feyenoord, and I truly wish them the best in the tournament.”
