In a thrilling encounter on Saturday night, Anders Dreyer found the back of the net in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, while Marcus Ingvartsen secured the victory five minutes later, as the newly formed MLS team, San Diego FC, made a stunning comeback to defeat Real Salt Lake 3-1.
This match marked the third outing in the league for the Californian side, which also features Jeppe Tverskov in their ranks.
As the game appeared set for a stalemate, Dreyer seized the opportunity to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage when a clearance fortuitously fell to him inside the box, and the former Danish international made no mistake in firing it home from close range.
With this being his third goal of the season, Dreyer etched his name in league history, becoming the first player to net two game-winning goals within the first three matches of an expansion team’s inaugural season.
Ingvartsen then added to the tally, scoring his first goal of the season just before full-time, breaking through on goal to extend the lead to 3-1.
At 26, Anders Dreyer, who has represented Denmark three times at the international level, made the switch from Belgian side Anderlecht to San Diego this winter.
He made an immediate impact, scoring twice in San Diego’s 2-0 victory over the reigning MLS champions, LA Galaxy, at the end of February.
The presence of several Danish players in the newly established MLS club is no accident, as one of San Diego’s sister clubs is FC Nordsjaelland.
Both teams are affiliated with the Right to Dream organisation, which encompasses FC Nordsjaelland and San Diego, alongside academies and teams in Ghana and Egypt.
Following their impressive win, San Diego now sits in second place in the MLS Western Conference.
