Atalanta are set to face Club Brugge in the second leg of their Champions League play-off, trailing by a goal after a contentious late penalty was awarded in the first match. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini (67) expressed his discontent on Monday, stating that diving is detrimental to the sport.
In the first leg, Brugge’s Gustaf Nilsson went down during stoppage time following a light touch from Isak Hien’s hand, leading to Nilsson scoring from the penalty spot and securing a 2-1 victory for his team.
Gasperini was incensed by the officiating after the match in Belgium and has also voiced his concerns over VAR decisions following a 1-1 stalemate with Torino earlier this month.
There has been recent discussion among Italian football authorities about a potential on-call VAR system, akin to tennis where players can contest an official’s ruling. However, Gasperini doesn’t support this idea.
“I oppose this solution because it would only slow the game down further, which is already quite sluggish due to the numerous whistles that are blown,” Gasperini told Sky Sports in advance of Tuesday’s clash with Brugge.
“It would likely escalate the controversy. We already have four officials at the game, including three in the VAR, and that seems excessive to me.”
“We must actively combat simulations, as they undermine football. These situations can have significant consequences, and clarity regarding contact is essential. Technology should also provide clear answers and take responsibility for its rulings.”
Gasperini is optimistic about including forward Ademola Lookman in the match against Brugge. The Nigerian striker has netted four goals in the Champions League and 10 in Serie A this season but has been sidelined for the last six matches due to a knee injury.
“We’ve missed Lookman during this period, coinciding with a dip in our goal-scoring and leaving us lacking in attack,” Gasperini stated.
“It appears he has recovered now. My plan is to have him on the bench and possibly bring him on if we face extra time. It’s crucial that he is fit.”
