Arsenal finds themselves a considerable distance behind the unbeaten Premier League leaders, Liverpool, even after a resounding 5-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday. However, midfielder Declan Rice (26) insists that the team is resolute in their pursuit of the top spot.
Rice starred in the match, providing two assists as Arsenal signalled to Liverpool that they’re not ready to back down in the title race.
Currently, Liverpool sits six points ahead of Arsenal, who occupy second place, while also having a game in hand. So far, Liverpool has demonstrated little inclination to falter in their quest for a 20th league title.
Despite this, Rice believes there’s plenty of time left in the season.
“Liverpool are still quite a bit ahead, especially with their game in hand, and with their recent win, you know you have to come into the match and take all three points,” Rice told Sky Sports.
“It’s particularly disappointing to drop points in games like the one against Aston Villa when we were 2-0 up, as we could have been much closer to Liverpool.”
“But we’re determined to be in the mix, and we’ll keep pushing forward. We certainly need some help from others, but we know our objective is to close the gap and chase after the Premier League title.”
“We must maintain a positive mindset, and I’m confident we’ll be alright.”
Arsenal narrowly missed out in the last two seasons as Manchester City thwarted Mikel Arteta’s side, extending their title-winning streak to a record four consecutive championships.
In the match on Sunday, goals from Martin Ødegaard, Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz, and Ethan Nwaneri effectively ruled City out of this season’s title race.
“It was a fantastic day for us, particularly knowing we had to secure a win. I’m really pleased with the way we did it,” Arteta commented.
“Overall, we scored some stunning goals, and the team showcased an excellent level of competitiveness.”
Arteta also heaped praise on teenager Lewis-Skelly, whose outstanding performance culminated in his first goal for Arsenal.
“You need standout individual performances to overcome Manchester City, and Myles was certainly one of those. His maturity and competitive spirit were impressive,” Arteta noted.
“He plays with such confidence and has scored a fantastic goal. Since joining us, he has consistently pushed the team and we really appreciate his character and bravery.”
