Ajax have been granted approval by UEFA to enlist SC Braga loanee Matheus as a replacement for the injured goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, the club from Amsterdam has announced.
The 41-year-old Pasveer suffered a groin injury during the first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt, which will see him sidelined for several weeks. In his absence, third-choice keeper Jay Gorter took the field during the 2-1 defeat.
According to UEFA regulations, a new goalkeeper can only be registered if two goalkeepers are injured and face a recovery period of at least four weeks. Nevertheless, the governing body of European football has allowed Ajax to add Matheus to their registration list as Pasveer’s replacement.
The 32-year-old Matheus, who is recognised among the top ten players for Europa League appearances with 58, joined Ajax on loan in January after the transfer of German goalkeeper Diant Ramaj to Borussia Dortmund. Since stepping into the role, Matheus has started three matches and impressively has yet to concede a goal.
The match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Ajax is set to commence Thursday evening at 18:45 CET.
