Lincoln McCarthy has faced a devastating setback just before the premier’s first game, as the Lions forward has been ruled out for the entire 2025 season due to a fresh ACL injury.
The 31-year-old missed a significant portion of last season from the same issue with his right knee.
Having pushed to earn a place in the Lions squad for this weekend, McCarthy reported swelling and discomfort to the club’s medical team after training last week.
Subsequent scans have unfortunately confirmed an ACL rupture, which will keep him off the field for up to a year.
Brisbane made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

“This is profoundly disappointing and heartbreaking for Linc, his family, and everyone at the Brisbane Lions to witness him suffer another ACL injury,” stated general manager Danny Daly.
“However, we were all incredibly impressed with how Linc managed his previous ACL setback and his unwavering commitment to return. We have every confidence he will face this injury with the same determination. In the meantime, the entire club will support Linc through this challenging period.”
Since arriving at the club from Geelong seven years ago, McCarthy has netted 142 goals in 122 games for the Lions.
Brisbane was set to kick off their AFL campaign against Geelong last week, but that match was postponed due to the effects of Cyclone Alfred.
Instead, the Lions will now take on the Sydney Swans in a grand final rematch this Saturday.
