Melbourne City v Macarthur Bulls | Shark Highlights | Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 | Round 22
This season has witnessed a surge of talent among young Australian strikers, and Melbourne City’s promising forward Max Caputo is now poised to make his mark after overcoming a challenging leg injury sustained during pre-season.
The 19-year-old netted his first two goals of the season in a 2-0 victory against the Macarthur Bulls on Friday night, putting an end to a 360-day spell without scoring in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
As an academy graduate contracted to City until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, Caputo was expected to be the club’s go-to striker at the beginning of the season before unfortunately suffering a significant leg break just prior to Round 1.
Making his Isuzu UTE A-League debut for City at the tender age of 15, Caputo has long been regarded as a future star, and he appears ready to showcase his abilities in the latter stages of the regular season after diligently rehabilitating from his injury.

One of the standout narratives of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League has been the remarkable performances of several young Australian strikers. Western United’s Noah Botic (23) currently leads the Golden Boot race with 10 goals, while Adelaide United’s Archie Goodwin (20), Sydney FC’s Adrian Segecic (20), and Western Sydney Wanderers’ Nicolas Milanovic (23) closely follow with eight goals each.
Following Caputo’s impressive brace against Macarthur, City’s head coach Aurelio Vidmar expressed admiration for the young striker’s commitment to his fitness regimen throughout his recovery and predicts a bright future for him in the upcoming weeks.
“I’m really pleased for Max… he faced a very tough injury in pre-season and has worked incredibly hard to get himself back into shape,” Vidmar commented.
“Max endured a severe injury, and he has put in significant effort in rehab to return to fitness. Initially, during his first weeks back, he felt a bit frustrated since he wasn’t as sharp or match-ready as he was before the injury. However, he persevered. We encouraged him to remain patient, trust in his abilities, and to keep moving towards the near post.
“When I joined last season, we experimented with him playing on the wing, but he has always been a classic number nine. He knows how to use his body effectively. During his time off, he hit the gym even harder, and it’s evident that he’s grown significantly in strength and physique.
“Last year, we faced a situation where Jamie was struggling to find the back of the net despite performing well in training. We decided to give him a chance, and he delivered. We were looking to start this season with Max as our primary striker; sadly, his injury impacted that plan, but he’s done a fantastic job bouncing back.
“He’s young, keen, enthusiastic, and utterly dedicated. He consistently puts in the extra effort in the gym.
“I’m hopeful he’ll finish the season strongly and set himself up for a tremendous year ahead.”
Vidmar was later quizzed about the impressive performances of players like Botic and Goodwin, who have become regulars in their respective teams this season, and whether Caputo could match the impressive scoring streaks of these young Australian talents in the near future.
“Noah is a perfect example,” Vidmar stated.
“He started the season strong, faced an injury setback, took a bit to get back into form, and then began scoring, which boosted his confidence and created momentum. Hopefully, Max can experience something similar.”
