Diego Simeone Declares Atletico Capable of Making History Against Real Madrid in the Champions League

History indicates that Atletico Madrid’s quest to overcome Real Madrid in the Champions League’s last 16 will not be straightforward. However, manager Diego Simeone feels there is a chance for his team to break their dismal streak against their rivals.

Over the past 11 seasons, the two sides have clashed in the Champions League on four occasions, with Atletico emerging on the losing end every time, particularly in the finals of 2014 and 2016.

As they prepare for yet another chapter in their fierce rivalry at Europe’s premier competition, Atletico currently boast superior form, sitting second in La Liga, two points ahead of Real Madrid.

“We are up against a highly respected opponent. We understand our strengths, will harness our full potential, and aim to steer the match into territory where we can inflict damage,” Simeone told the media ahead of Tuesday’s encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I invariably place Barcelona and Madrid where they are due to their historical significance, but we are focused on our development, which is an exciting journey.”

Simeone also remarked that this tie is a remarkable event for everyone involved, stating: “This is spectacular for the city, for Spain, as we could have a Spanish team in the quarter-finals, and for us, it’s about enjoying the experience.”

For Atletico to secure a victory over Real, they will rely heavily on the performance of 25-year-old striker Julian Alvarez.

The Argentine international, who found the net in Atletico’s 1-0 triumph over Athletic Bilbao last Saturday, has scored 21 goals in all competitions since his transfer from Manchester City in August, in a deal rumoured to be worth 75 million euros ($78.56 million).

“He is still quite young. He needs to maintain this momentum, keep honing his skills, as he still has plenty of room to grow,” Simeone commented.

“We hope his teammates and the coaching staff will support his continued development. He appears to be brimming with energy and eagerness to improve. That will play a crucial role in his progression.”
