Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his enthusiasm regarding the recovery of midfielder Rodri, with hopes that the Ballon d’Or winner could make a return to the pitch before the season concludes.
Initially, Guardiola had ruled Rodri out for the rest of the season following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in September. However, Rodri has been setting his sights on an earlier comeback post-surgery and has recently begun individual training.
“The fans should know they’re not alone in their excitement,” Guardiola remarked to reporters after Saturday’s impressive 3-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle, which saw his side progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
“He was touching the ball today and was in the changing room … he’s feeling more confident and happier.
“I couldn’t have anticipated this before, but I think there’s a chance that, before the season wraps up, even though it may not be in the Club World Cup, he could be of assistance in the Premier League.”
Despite his optimism, the manager emphasised that the club would exercise caution regarding Rodri’s rehabilitation.
“One step at a time. We must avoid making foolish decisions that could lead to setbacks by rushing him back prematurely. But yes, he looks good. Still, I wouldn’t say he’s close to a return yet,” Guardiola added.
