Ligue 1 front-runners Paris Saint-Germain will welcome Lille on Saturday in a fixture that could prove beneficial for their preparations ahead of next week’s Champions League Round of 16 first-leg encounter against Liverpool, according to manager Luis Enrique, who spoke to reporters on Friday.
Occupying fourth place, Lille have showcased impressive form in the Champions League this season with their aggressive pressing tactics, successfully reaching the last 16 where they are set to face Borussia Dortmund. They have claimed notable victories against Atletico Madrid and reigning champions Real Madrid.
“I believe there are similarities between Lille and Liverpool, particularly in their defensive setups, making this a valuable match for us,” Enrique stated.
“Lille are a formidable side. Our team (PSG) is eager to demonstrate that we can compete against anyone…
“This match serves as a significant test for players aiming to feature against Liverpool. Lille poses a strong challenge with a style of play akin to that of Liverpool. When you’re well prepared, fatigue is not a factor.”
PSG are facing a packed schedule in March with five matches to be played over 16 days, including two Champions League clashes with Liverpool and Ligue 1 encounters against lowly Stade Rennais and a home match against second-placed Olympique de Marseille, who trail by 13 points.
“During such busy periods, it’s crucial to manage the minutes played and the intensity of these games, taking into account not just the minutes themselves but also the nature of the matches,” Enrique commented.
“I believe we’re in a good position. We’re effectively distributing minutes among the players, which is positive.
“All our players are fit and available, allowing me to select from the entire squad, and they are all ready to contribute, which delights me.”
Enrique also mentioned that winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who joined from Napoli for €70 million (approximately $72.84 million) last month, is settling in well with the PSG team.
Kvaratskhelia has made an immediate impact, scoring twice and providing four assists in nine appearances across all competitions since becoming a part of the reigning French champions.
“Similar to how we approached (Lucas) Beraldo last year, we are providing him with the information he needs,” Enrique elaborated.
“His adaptation will develop through training and match experience. When bringing in a player of this calibre, you’re working with an intelligent individual who understands how to meld into the gameplay.
“It’s important for us to give him ample space to acclimatise properly while capitalising on his strengths.”
