Jordi Cruyff has teamed up with fellow Dutchman Patrick Kluivert within the Indonesian national team as the nation intensifies its efforts to secure a place in its first World Cup since gaining independence.
The former Barcelona player and sporting director, who is the son of the legendary Johan Cruyff, has been appointed as the technical adviser for the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI).
Earlier this year, the PSSI appointed Kluivert, another legendary figure from the Netherlands and Barcelona fame, as their new head coach.
Indonesia is currently participating in the crucial third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in North America and has launched a recruitment initiative aimed at Dutch-born players, now to be managed by Dutch coaching staff.
Cruyff, aged 51 and a former Manchester United player, was selected for this role due to his vast experience, which includes previous managerial positions at Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel and Shenzhen FC in China, according to the PSSI.
“His background as both a player and a coach is vital for shaping the future of Indonesian football,” stated PSSI chairman Erick Thohir.
Thohir also noted that Kluivert recommended Cruyff for the position.
“I’m thrilled. I look forward to applying my experience and insights to elevate Indonesian football,” expressed Cruyff.
Indonesia currently sits third in their World Cup qualifying group, having achieved one victory and three draws from six matches.
The top two teams from the group will qualify directly for North America, while the third and fourth-placed teams will advance to another round of qualifying.
The next challenge for Indonesia is a crucial away match in March against Australia, who occupy second place in qualifying Group C, but are only a point ahead. This will be followed by a home match against Bahrain.
