Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti (65) stated on Tuesday that his squad is performing admirably despite a demanding schedule, labelling the football calendar as “absurd” and “unsustainable.”
Should Madrid advance far in the Champions League, Copa del Rey, and the upcoming Club World Cup in summer, they could potentially participate in up to 72 matches this season.
Madrid has already claimed victories in the Intercontinental Cup and the European Super Cup, although they faced defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final held in Saudi Arabia.
“Considering the ludicrous calendar we must navigate, which affects all teams—not just us—we’re managing quite well,” Ancelotti conveyed to the media.
“All teams contending in these challenging times are doing remarkably well, given that the calendar is simply unsustainable.”
Los Blancos are set to meet Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals in the Basque region on Wednesday.
“In just 52 days, tomorrow marks our 17th match,” Ancelotti continued.
“Reflecting on my playing days, a season would typically include 30 league matches, meaning we would already be in the latter half of the season.”
Real Madrid triumphed over Manchester City, winning 6-3 on aggregate in the Champions League play-off round to advance to the knockout stage and currently sit level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
Ancelotti mentioned that he, his staff, and the players are in need of a breather.
“I’m exhausted, and I suspect you (journalists) are feeling the same way. From what I observe, you also need a break… we all need a rest,” he expressed.
Kylian Mbappe missed the training session on Tuesday due to a dental issue, but Ancelotti confirmed that he would still be travelling to San Sebastian and could potentially make an appearance.
He also commended Mbappe’s attitude since joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
“Mbappe came in with humility and a low profile,” the Italian coach remarked.
“His presence has elevated the team spirit; there’s an increased sense of confidence with one of the world’s elite players amongst us… and in terms of ego, nothing has changed at all.”
Ancelotti also had a pointed remark for La Liga president Javier Tebas, who referred to Madrid as a “cry-baby” club following their recent grievances regarding Spanish refereeing.
“He talks excessively about Real Madrid since I arrived,” the Italian noted.
“There are far more significant issues at hand, and he should concentrate more on addressing the problems facing Spanish football.”
