Barry Ferguson, the former Rangers captain, has accepted the role of interim manager for the Scottish Premiership until the end of the season following the dismissal of Philippe Clement.
The announcement of the Belgian’s departure came from the Glasgow club on Sunday, just a day after their disappointing 2-0 loss at home to St Mirren.
Currently sitting in second place, Rangers find themselves 13 points adrift of Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Premiership and recently faced an unexpected defeat in the Scottish Cup against Queen’s Park earlier this month.
Ferguson, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Ibrox as an ex-Scotland midfielder, also has previous management experience with Clyde, Kelty Hearts, and Alloa.
“When the opportunity to take on this role arose, it was something I couldn’t refuse,” Ferguson shared with Rangers TV. “While it’s only for a short term of three months, it’s my responsibility to invigorate this group of players.”
He continued, “Winning is at the core of Rangers. That’s how I was raised, and that’s the mentality I wish to instil in my players.”
“The expectation here demands that you win every match. Fans come expecting victories, and frankly, we haven’t delivered enough this year.”
Rangers’ chief executive, Patrick Stewart, welcomed Ferguson back during this challenging period, emphasising, “I must stress that the challenges we are currently facing extend beyond the managerial position.”
“The ongoing football review aims to tackle these issues, and we will continue to implement its recommendations in the weeks and months ahead of appointing a new permanent manager.”
Clement took over from Michael Beale in October 2023 and guided Rangers to clinch the League Cup trophy just two months after his appointment.
The former managers of Club Brugge and Monaco briefly brought Rangers into title contention last season; however, they ultimately finished eight points behind Celtic.
At present, the club is heading towards a trophyless domestic season but remains in the hunt in the Europa League, where they will face Fenerbahce in the Round of 16 next month.
Ferguson’s inaugural match as interim manager will take place on Wednesday, when Rangers square off against Kilmarnock in a league fixture.
