The AFL is currently buzzing with big-money deals, and GWS standout Finn Callaghan has reignited the debate over who will be the first player to command a $2 million-a-season contract.
As reported by Tom Morris from 9news Melbourne, Callaghan turned down an offer from St Kilda worth $17 million over ten years to stay with the Giants.
This deal would have made him the highest-paid player in AFL history, while Richmond’s Tom Lynch is estimated to be making around $1.5 million annually.
With the salary cap poised to rise and AFL revenues up, the future looks lucrative for players.
At the AFL captains’ day held on Monday, several team leaders shared their thoughts with 9news on who they think will be the inaugural $2 million player.

One young talent stood out as a popular choice.
Toby Greene (GWS): “I reckon Sam Darcy is a contender. His height and skill set make him a bit of a freak.”
Toby Nankervis (Richmond): “Harley Reid would definitely be worth every penny.”
Jack Steele (St Kilda): “I’d have to say Harley Reid as well.”
Lachie Neale (Brisbane Lions): “My pick is Harley Reid; he’ll be highly sought after by Vic clubs, but I hope he remains with West Coast and shines for them.”

James Sicily (Hawthorn): “I’d say Harley,” he remarked, before being asked if Reid would be joining Hawthorn after a photo surfaced of Reid and Hawks coach Sam Mitchell at Tom Barrass’ wedding. “I saw that photo; time will tell,” he responded.
Zach Merrett (Essendon): “I would have to say Nick Daicos; he’s the obvious choice. He’s a phenomenal player and absolutely deserves it. This reflects positively on the future of the game.”
As per afl.com.au, there are currently 25 players earning more than $1 million annually in 2024.
Among those expected to be the highest earners are Christian Petracca, Dustin Martin, and Tom Lynch.
