Key players from the A-League contributed to this notable day for the Young Socceroos in Shenzhen, notably new Melbourne Victory recruit Alex Badolato, who, having joined from rivals Western Sydney Wanderers, netted a spectacular goal in the 74th minute to propel the team to the final four and their first World Cup since 2013.
Adelaide United’s rising star, Luka Jovanovic, longed his brilliance with an incredible free-kick that levelled the score for Australia in the 22nd minute. The Young Socceroos had to overcome another deficit when Reds teammate Panagiotis Kikianis equalised just after the hour mark.
Then, Badolato made his mark with a memorable half-volley, setting the stage for a potential clash against either Iran or Japan in the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
