There’s no denying that the Cowboys exceeded expectations in the previous season. Many experts had forecasted a dismal run for them just a year ago, yet they managed to reach the finals before exiting in the second round.
However, with the departure of their three most seasoned backs – Valentine Holmes, Chad Townsend, and Kyle Feldt – and the lack of high-profile signings for replacements, they may face greater challenges this season.
On the bright side, they still boast talented fullback Scott Drinkwater, who ranked second in the league for try assists in 2024. If he can maintain his fitness, points should come more easily.
That said, it’s crucial for the revamped halves pairing of Tom Dearden and Jake Clifford to develop a strong synergy now that Townsend is no longer in the picture.

Dearden is a proven talent and ranks among the top playmakers in the game, yet Clifford must overcome some inconsistencies that have plagued his performance.
Clifford will face competition from Jaxon Purdue and Tom Duffy, both keen to secure a position in the 17-man squad.
While the absence of the three high-profile players may limit scoring opportunities, there’s still enough talent to challenge opposing defences if Drinkwater can wield his lethal form once more.
Last season, scoring wasn’t an issue for the Cowboys; what hampered them was their defensive struggles.
They recorded the worst points differential of all finals teams, primarily due to several significant defeats throughout the season.
The forward pack has been reinforced with three seasoned players – Karl Lawton (Sea Eagles), Kai O’Donnell (Leigh Leopards), and John Bateman (Wests Tigers).
I observed that Bateman had a decent season with a struggling Tigers side and am hearing encouraging early reports about O’Donnell.
In co-captain Reuben Cotter, the Cowboys possess one of the most motivating and industrious forwards in the NRL, ensuring the rest of the pack keeps up their intensity.
2025 Gains: Karl Lawton (Sea Eagles), Kai O’Donnell (Leigh Leopards), Jaxson Paulo (Sea Eagles), John Bateman (Wests Tigers)
2025 Losses: Kulikefu Finefeuiaki (Dolphins), Chad Townsend (Roosters), Jake Granville (released), Kyle Feldt (St Helens), Valentine Holmes (Dragons), Jamayne Taunoa-Brown (retired), D’Jazirhae Pua’avase (Sea Eagles)
Best Acquisition: Bateman is a proven winner and a veteran forward who is expected to integrate seamlessly into the talented Cowboys pack.
He runs excellent lines and possesses impressive ball skills.
Key Player This Season: Reece Robson needs to demonstrate to the Cowboys supporters that his commitment to the club remains unwavering, even after signing a lucrative long-term deal with the Roosters starting in 2026.
Major Concern: Can the backline retain its scoring prowess of previous years now that try-scoring stars Val Holmes and Kyle Feldt are absent?
