Carlton’s two-time Coleman medallist, Charlie Curnow, has become the latest marquee player to be sidelined for Round 1 due to injury.
The towering forward recently underwent knee surgery to have a screw removed, resulting in him missing at least the opening two rounds of the season for the Blues.
This marks his third surgical intervention during the off-season, primarily targeting his persistent ankle issues.
The club has attempted to minimise concerns regarding the injury, expressing optimism that he could potentially return for their first match against Richmond, or in Round 2 against Hawthorn.
“This operation permitted the extraction of a screw that was no longer necessary from a previous knee injury, which the club identified as the source of some discomfort for Curnow over the past week,” the Blues disclosed on Tuesday.

“The club acted swiftly to rectify the issue to ensure there will be no lingering effects for Curnow as the season commences. “Given the minimally invasive nature of the surgery, Curnow is expected to resume running within the week and should be back to full training in the following weeks, being available for selection in either Round 1 or Round 2.”
Curnow is not the sole star now hampered by injury as GWS midfielder Tom Green is also facing a potential absence of up to six weeks due to a calf strain.
The Giants confirmed that the talented 24-year-old withdrew from match simulations last week due to “calf soreness,” later revealing that he will require an absence of four to six weeks.

“The 24-year-old participated in Friday’s practice match, but only lasted a quarter before experiencing calf discomfort,” stated the Giants in a club release on Tuesday evening.
“Following the session, Green underwent scans to ascertain the severity of the calf issue. He is now projected to be out of action for the next four to six weeks, therefore missing the early part of the Giants’ 2025 season.”
Below is the injury status of all 18 clubs as they head into the 2025 season.
