The Western Force have made a remarkable move in their coaching ranks by securing the services of former All Blacks assistant Leon MacDonald.
MacDonald, a veteran of 56 Tests for New Zealand, was previously on the coaching team under All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson until an unexpected departure in August.
He resigned as an assistant prior to New Zealand’s upcoming Rugby Championship Tests in South Africa, with Robertson noting that their exit stemmed from “differing perspectives.”

In a surprising twist, the Force have appointed MacDonald as a coaching consultant, where he will lend his expertise to both the men’s and women’s programs across the club.
Western Force CEO Niamh O’Connor has expressed great ambition for the club’s future.
“Leon’s recruitment is a vital aspect of our three-stage strategic plan, which aims to establish the Western Force as the premier club globally, both in terms of player development and coaching excellence,” O’Connor stated.

“The next stage of our transformation focuses on establishing a robust foundation to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of our club.
“The development of coaching frameworks and pathways is essential to this goal, making Leon’s appointment a strategic milestone,” she added.
“He brings extensive knowledge from both playing and coaching at the pinnacle of the sport. Having him on board is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”
MacDonald previously led the Blues from 2019 to 2023 before transitioning to the All Blacks.
“I am thrilled to take on this role,” MacDonald said. “It presents a different set of challenges from what I’m used to, but I’m looking forward to supporting the coaches in their efforts.
“What caught my attention about this opportunity is the ambitious vision of the Western Force as a rugby club, currently boasting nine Wallabies and eight Wallaroos in their ranks.
“The club is resolute in their aim to take a significant leap in the Super Rugby competition, and their enthusiasm truly resonated with me.
“Plus, the location is stunning, so I’m excited about making the move.”

“There’s a renewed sense of optimism surrounding Australian rugby, and I’m excited to contribute to this resurgence.”
MacDonald, who arrived in Perth on Tuesday, has committed to the club until the conclusion of the 2025 Super Rugby season.
The Force kicked off their season with a thrilling comeback victory over Moana Pasifika on Saturday.
