Napoli may relinquish their position at the summit of Serie A this weekend after coming away with a 2-2 draw against Lazio on Saturday. However, coach Antonio Conte (55) commended his players for their impressive adaptability in light of necessary formation adjustments due to injuries.
Currently sitting atop the league with 56 points, Napoli could be overtaken by second-placed Inter Milan, who trail by just two points, as they prepare to face Juventus on Sunday.
“I’m genuinely pleased with the performance. We were well aware of the challenges posed by Lazio,” Conte stated during a press conference.
“There’s certainly a sense of disappointment, given that we’ve dropped four points at the Olimpico in just 15 days—two against AS Roma and another two today.”
“However, this match was somewhat distinct from the previous one; this draw bears more significant weight. We’ve demonstrated our determination to push through, despite the setbacks we’re facing.”

Earlier, Napoli were involved in a 1-1 draw against Roma on February 2, where Angelino scored a last-gasp equaliser for the home side, following which they played another 1-1 draw at home against Udinese just a week later.
“I truly admire the spirit of these players who consistently strive to overcome challenges,” Conte remarked following the clash with Lazio.
“Our current ranking would not be possible without this extraordinary spirit, regardless of differing opinions. Today’s match was a positive outcome, especially considering our fourth tactical change.”
“Those who understand football will appreciate how challenging it is to implement a new formation; it takes considerable effort to switch systems four times over a period of seven months.”
“We continue to persevere with our heads held high, aiming to leave the pitch having given our all.”
Recently, forward David Neres has joined the list of injured players, with the Brazilian acquisition expected to be sidelined for about a month due to a muscle injury.
Defenders Mathias Olivera (calf) and Leonardo Spinazzola (muscle injury) were already on the treatment table.
“Upon hearing about Neres’ injury, along with those to Spinazzola and Olivera, we had to adapt,” Conte continued.
“Integrating (defender Alessandro) Buongiorno back into a four-man defence after a lengthy absence of more than two months proved to be challenging. However, the boys did exceptionally well, as we’ve established concepts that can be applied irrespective of the formation, and they executed the match to the best of their abilities.”
“I was reluctant to alter the three-man midfield, so as to make the most of the midfielders’ skills; we will see how long we maintain this system.”
