Western United FC v Auckland FC – Shark Highlights | Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 | Round 19
Auckland FC will conclude another weekend atop the Isuzu UTE A-League standings following a 2-0 victory against top-four contenders Western United at Ironbark Fields on Saturday evening.
A stunning strike from Uruguayan forward Guillermo May placed the Black Knights ahead late in the first half, and just three minutes later, Max Mata extended the lead to 2-0 on the brink of half-time.
This rapid-fire sequence was crucial in the tightly contested matchup as Auckland managed to maintain their advantage throughout the second half, securing three points in an exhilarating clash in Tarneit.
Western entered the weekend in third place but were overtaken by both Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City. After suffering their first defeat in five games, they now find themselves just a point ahead of Sydney FC in sixth and Macarthur Bulls in seventh.
Mata managed to find the net just before half-time, but not before missing an earlier golden opportunity in Tarneit, sending a header wide from close range after a threatening cross from the left flank.
Riku Danzaki had the first significant opportunity for Western, forcing Paulsen into a spectacular diving save with a left-footed strike aimed at the top-left corner.
Hiroshi Ibusuki followed Mata’s example by heading wide from a dangerous position as Western attempted to find the breakthrough. However, the score remained deadlocked until the 44th minute when Auckland ignited a late surge, leading to a 2-0 lead at the break.
May opened the scoring for the visitors with a spectacular long-range shot, unleashed off his left foot. The Uruguayan’s decision to shoot took Western’s keeper Matthew Sutton by surprise as the ball nestled into the bottom-right corner.

Just three minutes later, Auckland struck again, with Mata converting a straightforward finish to double their advantage. Neyder Moreno played a delightful ball for Mata after evading Western defender Dylan Leonard.
Western emerged for the second half facing a significant challenge. After John Aloisi brought Matthew Grimaldi off the bench, the creative midfielder sought to ignite a comeback with a clever reverse pass into the box for Rhys Bozinovski, setting him up for a one-on-one with Paulsen.
It seemed certain that a goal would come from Bozinovski’s attempt, but Paulsen made a brilliant save, preserving his side’s two-goal lead.
