Juventus head coach Thiago Motta (42) expressed his pleasure with the squad’s depth as it played a crucial role in securing a victory for his team, highlighted by substitute Samuel Mbangula (21) netting a late goal during Tuesday’s 2-1 triumph over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs.
This was the Italian club’s second consecutive late winner, following Kolo Muani’s decisive penalty that led to a 2-1 victory against Como in Serie A just last week.
“We are a youthful team that needs to infuse a lot of energy into our play to create challenges for our opponents. Once again today, the players who came off the bench elevated the team’s performance,” Motta remarked at a press conference.
“I’m extremely pleased with Mbangula. He brings energy, he dribbles well, and he finds the back of the net. His attitude is fantastic; he always gives his all.”
A goal from Weston McKennie put Juventus ahead in the first half of the tie, but Ivan Perisic brought PSV level after the interval.
“McKennie is an excellent player and a vital part of the squad; he is a top talent, which is why he contributes across various positions and frequently,” Motta added.
“It was a balanced encounter against a team that aims to play attractive football and executes it well. This win is merely the initial step; we must deliver an outstanding performance in the second leg to advance to the Round of 16.”
Juventus will travel to PSV for the second leg of the tie next Wednesday.
