A South African jockey has expressed his regret following an incident where he was caught on camera attempting to strike a fellow rider during a race at Turffontein on Sunday.
The National Horseracing Authority of South Africa has initiated an investigation into Gavin Lerena’s conduct after he was seen standing in the stirrups on the favourite, Gimme A Storm, and striking Jason Gates, who was aboard the 66-1 outsider Blurred Vision, multiple times with his whip.
Lerena appeared to hit Gates several times as both riders vied for position in the sprint to the finish line.
In anticipation of a hearing, which has yet to be scheduled, Lerena issued a statement explaining that his actions were a reaction to Gates’ conduct earlier in the race.
“I believe it’s important to provide a formal statement to the racing community,” Lerena’s statement read.
“The events that transpired are completely out of character for me, and I sincerely regret the incident.

“I want to extend my heartfelt apologies to the owners and trainer of the horse, my sponsors, the fans of racing, and the authorities involved on race day.
“I must clarify that my reaction stemmed from actions and encounters with Mr. Gates.
“In the heat of competition, it is not uncommon for instinctive reactions to emerge in response to what is seen as provocation or aggression, leading to behaviour that we would not typically display.
“I recognise that my response has sparked a range of opinions and discussions.”
He further remarked: “Racing holds a significant place in my heart; I have immense respect for it and am committed to enhancing its reputation.
“I strive to uphold the principles that make racing truly remarkable.
“Unfortunately, today’s incident overshadowed that commitment, and I am truly sorry for any disappointment it has caused to punters, owners, trainers, fans, and officials.”
